Ljudska univerza Kočevje (Adult Education Centre) successfully acquired EU funds for execution of »Testing of systematic step-by-step implementation model introducing healthy school menus and enhancing physical activity in primary schools and preparing guidelines for its use in other school activity in primary schools and preparing guidelines for its use in other school environments« project known by acronym ZDRAVKO.

(2014/1/17037714-SI2.695522).

Project will take place from 1.1.2015 to 30.6.2016. Five elementary schools (Zbora odposlancev Kočevje, Ob Rinži Kočevje, Stara Cerkev, Fara, Dr. Ivan Prijatelj Sodražica) and 3 municipalities (Kočevje, Kostel, Sodražica) collaborate in the project as joined partners. Main goal of the project is to raise awareness of pupils, parents, teachers, headmasters, kitchen staff as well as general public of importance of everyday physical activity. We will have numerous activities within the project, the purpose of which will be to steer pupils and their parents towards healthier lifestyles. We also aim to raise general publics’ awareness on influence of healthy, balanced diet and exercise on general well-being.

Activities within the project will include introducing healthy food in school meals. Ten healthy new dishes made of vegetable, wheat and dairy products will be introduced into school menus of 5 partner schools in 2015/16 school year. We will promote balanced diet in cooking workshops with parents and pupils in order to show them, that preparation of healthy meals doesn’t necessarily take lot of time, all it takes is positive attitude and delicious idea. Workshops have added value in the fact that parents and children spend time together, learning together and from each other.

Excessive consumption of sweet drinks and unhealthy foods in combination with spending free time in company of electronic gadgets, raised the percentage of overweight and obese kids in Slovenia as well as Europe. By introducing 5 minute physical breaks in elementary schools we hope to encourage pupils to perform daily exercises and show them how much they can do for their bodies while spending very little time. The vegetable gardens will be planted, to provide students with practical gardening experience. Pupils will participate in planting, as well as harvesting produce. They will have the opportunity to observe the process of gardening from seed to ripe vegetables which they will get to pick by hand.
